I made my own wedding cake. This is NOT something I would recommend for every bride, in fact, I wouldn’t recommend it for most brides. But, I had something very specific in mind and I didn’t want to pay $3,000 for it (actually, I’m not even sure how much it would cost from a bakery, but three grand is probably pretty close). And, to clarify, my mom and I made it together. She did the baking and the crumb frosting, and I did the decorating.
I wanted six tiers, all white but with different textures. I also found a super cute Great Cupcake Pan from William Sonoma while we were registering for our wedding. So, I added it to our registry and hoped I would get it at a shower and be able to use it for the wedding cake. I was very excited that I did!
We chose two flavors for our cake, vanilla cake with cream cheese frosting and strawberry filling and chocolate cake with orange buttercream frosting.
The bottom tier was all fondant. I covered it in fondant, then cut out little fondant discs and placed them evenly around the cake. The next tier up, I used a meringue frosting with light peaks all over it. Above that was another fondant tier. I used green ribbons to accent it and made a white chocolate “C” to sit in front of it. Above that was white chocolate shavings loosely packed into all sides of the cake. Then was another fondant coating, this time, I made circles and rings to place sporadically over it. The top was my great cupcake. The bottom of the great cupcake was coated in a white chocolate shell and the top was covered in fondant.
I totally loved my cake. I was thrilled to get exactly what I wanted without paying through the nose. It only cost me a mild headache and a few tears. Our florist added some red roses and apple green orchids to tie it in with the rest of the wedding.
